MAy 2023

Task 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

High in bamboo forests in the rainy mountains of China lives one of the world's rarest mammals: the giant panda. Only about 1,500 of  these black-and-white relatives of bears survive in the wild.

Pandas  eat almost nothing but bamboo shoots and leaves. Occasionally they eat other vegetation, fish, or small animals, but bamboo accounts for 99 per cent of their diets. Pandas eat fast, they eat a lot, and they spend about 12 hours a day doing it. The reason is they digest only a fifth of what they eat. Overall, bamboo is not very nutritious. To stay healthy, they have to eat a lot.

The shape of teeth helps pandas crush bamboo shoots and leaves. To get the bamboo to their mouths, they hold it with their front paws. A panda should have at least two bamboo species where it lives, or it will starve. A lack of bamboo threatens the limited panda population.

Task 1. Read the text aloud.

Since ancient times, humans have loved and cherished cats as their pets. Today more than 80 million cats reside in US homes, with an estimated three cats for every dog on the planet. Yet there is still a lot we don't know about our feline friends  - including what they think of their owners.

After observing pet cats for several years, scientists have come to an intriguing conclusion: cats don't really understand people the way dogs do. They tend to feel it is they who own masters, not vice versa. On the contrary, dogs perceive people as being very different from themselves. As soon as they see a human, they change their behaviour. The way a dog plays with a human is completely different from the way it plays with a dog. Cats are independent creatures and they can easily change their owner without changing their habits.

Dear friends, it's time to study the samples of TASK3 samples and try our best!
Watch the instructions carefully, choose any topic to start practising, and RECORD your answer. while analysing, you'd better hear the record again and again-to notice the positive sides and possible drawbacks.

SO, BREAK YOUR LEG!!!!!

Task 3. You are going to give a talk about photography. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes.
Remember to say:
• why people like taking pictures
• why taking photos is more popular today than it was in the past
• what the best photo you have ever taken is
You have to talk continuously.
Now I’m going to give a talk about photography.
1. In my opinion, taking pictures is really popular now. Many of my friends and classmates have cameras on their mobiles which they use to take photos of everything they like.
1. Today taking photos is more popular than it was in the past because cameras are less expensive and many people can afford them. You can even take pictures using camera on your mobile phone!Also, there are a lot of social networks, for example Facebook or Vkontakte where people post photos and share them with friends.
2. Personally I have one really great photo. It was taken last year in Rome. You can see my mother and me on it. We are standing near a beautiful fountain in the center of the city. The sun is shining and we are smiling.
In the end I would like to say that taking photos helps us save one of the most precious things in life — our memories, which can always be with us when we look at this or that picture.
Грамматика — употреблены три времени — Present Simple, Present Continuous (при описании фото) и Past Simple, сравнительная степень (less expensive), превосходная степень (the most precious), пассивный залог (was taken), модальный глагол can.

Moscow
Russia

Dear Tim,
Dear Rebecca,

Thanks (a lot) for your (last) letter.
Your last letter was a real surprise.
I was glad to get your letter.
It was great to hear from you! / It was great to hear that… / I was happy to hear…

Sorry I haven’t written for so long but …/ Sorry I haven’t been in touch for so long.
I'm sorry I haven't answered earlier but I was really busy with my school.

I’m glad you passed your History test!
Sounds like you had a great time in London!
Great news about your…!

Или Wish me luck!

Well, I’d better go now as I have to do my homework.
Anyway, I have to go now because my Mum asked me to help her with the washing up.
I’ve got to go now! It’s time for my favourite TV show.

Write (back) soon!
Take care and keep in touch!
Drop me a letter when you can.
Hope to hear from you soon.
I can’t wait to hear from you!

1) Love,
2) Lots of love,
3) All my love,
4) All the best,
5) Best wishes,
6) With best wishes,
7) Yours,

Kate

Comparing photos (SAMPLE)

In the picture number 1 we can see a band playing. Perhaps, they are playing jazz music, which is well seen by the instrument they are using. In the second one we can see a kid playing piano.
I can say that these two pictures are having much in common. They both are showing us a musical event. Both of them are related to music.
But there is a difference as well. In the picture on the left we see the audience, on the right - only the musician. The first one shows us some professional musicians, and a boy is a musical school’s student, I suppose.
s about some musical festival (this information is given on the billboard at the top of the picture), meanwhile the right one tells about a musical exam, as I supposed earlier.
ed to be a student in the musical school and I remember how hard it was to play alone on a big scene. Each exam and each concert was a big stress for me (for my teachers and my parents as well). I think that playing in a band is a bit more relaxing, because you feel other musicians near you.

In the photo number one we can see two kids playing table football. This game is also known as kicker. They look very concentrated and a bit excited. In the second picture we see a group of young people playing football.
Both of the photographs are telling us about different kinds of football. We can say that both of them are related with sport. But there is a difference as well. Firstly, kids are playing indoor and a football game on the right is obviously an outdoor activity.
Secondly, kids are playing in one team, because they are standing on one side of the table. The football payers are in different teams, because they have a uniform of different colors.
As for me, I’d prefer playing kicker, because I like this game a lot. I think it’s very exciting and I recommend everyone to play it

20 May, 2015
Dear friends, here are some cliches and rules how to write an informal letter.
Hope, the stuff is of great use.

Moscow
Russia

Dear Tim,
Dear Rebecca,

Thanks (a lot) for your (last) letter.
Your last letter was a real surprise.
I was glad to get your letter.
It was great to hear from you! / It was great to hear that… / I was happy to hear…
Sorry I haven’t written for so long but …/ Sorry I haven’t been in touch for so long.
I'm sorry I haven't answered earlier but I was really busy with my school.
I’m glad you passed your History test!
Sounds like you had a great time in London!
Great news about your…!

Предполагается, что письмо должно быть написано в неформальном стиле, поэтому вы можете использовать неформальные слова-связки, такие как well, by the way, anyway, so, разговорные выражения типаGuess what? Или Wish me luck!

Well, I’d better go now as I have to do my homework.
Anyway, I have to go now because my Mum asked me to help her with the washing up.
I’ve got to go now! It’s time for my favourite TV show.
Write (back) soon!
Take care and keep in touch!
Drop me a letter when you can.
Hope to hear from you soon.
I can’t wait to hear from you!

1) Love,
2) Lots of love,
3) All my love,
4) All the best,
5) Best wishes,
6) With best wishes,
7) Yours,
Kate

Task 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

As soon as spring brings a new growth of bushes and berries, bears start feeding. They eat and eat. All through the spring and summer their feeding goes on. The bears build themselves up. They store food and fats that they will need in the fall when they start their long sleep.
As days grow shorter, and the temperature begins to fall, bears hunt for a sleeping place. It may be a shallow cave, or a deep crack between rocks. Some bears end up sleeping in hollow logs. Logs seem to be bears’ favourite places. Bears seem to choose small spaces. They can keep warmer in a cave that’s just large enough to hold them than in a larger cave. They often line their sleeping place with leaves and dried grass.
All through their winter naps, bears will not eat. Often they will sleep for 7 months, moving only now and then.

You are going to study abroad for three months and want to find a swimming pool you could attend. You’d like to get more information about this swimming pool. In 1.5 minutes you are to ask five questions to find out the following:

Many lands that had once been swamps were drained or filled in. There are different reasons why people drained swamplands. Some were drained to fight diseases caused by insects that lived in them. Because swamps were considered unpleasant places in which to live and harmful to health, many people thought that unless they were drained the land was worthless.
Other swamps were drained to make new land. As the population grew and more land was needed, people drained swamps or filled them to make room for more farms and factories, more roads and airports.
Few people thought that it might be harmful to get rid of swamps. As swamps disappeared, other things happened. There were both more floods and more droughts than before. There were also more fires, for swamps had acted as firebreaks. Hunters noticed that there was less wild game. Wild life that once lived in the swamps was dying out, because it had no place to live.

Task 2. Study the advertisement.You are going to visit Japan this summer and you'd like to have more information about the flights to Japan. In 1.5 minutes you are to ask five questions to find out the following:

·         знать процедуру проведения экзамена;
·         ознакомиться с форматом бланков ответов;
·         освоить процедуру переноса ответов из КИМ в бланки ответов;
·         получить навык работы в условиях ограниченного времени;
·         научиться точно и правильно прочитывать и выполнять инструкции к тестовым заданиям;
·         установить соответствия между звучащими высказываниями и предъявленными в задании утверждениями;
·         установить правильность или неправильность высказывания и наличия информации в тексте, выбрать ответ из предложенных TRUE, FALSE, NOT STATED;
·         для понимания основного содержания (skim listening listening for gist)
·         умение догадаться о значении слова по контексту или по аналогии с родным языком;
·         умение понимать информацию в перефразированном виде;
·         умение правильно понять текст, если не знаешь значения какого-то слова;
·         умение прогнозировать развитие текста;
·         умение понять лексические и грамматические средства связи в тексте;
·         умение понять скрытую информацию;
·         умение догадаться о взаимоотношениях и социальных ролях собеседников, их отношении к данному вопросу, месте разговора и т.д.;
·         умение понимать невербальные способы передачи информации( интонацию, логическое ударение);
·         умение сделать выводы из текста, например, по ключевым словам;
3.8. Not stated
Принята следующая классификация видов чтения: skimming or reading for gist, scanning and reading for detailed comprehension, в отечественной методике чтение с пониманием основного содержания, чтение с извлечением необходимой информации, чтение с полным и точным пониманием текста.
Советы
·         выделить тему, основные мысли;
·         выбрать значащие факты, отделить их от деталей;
·         выделить смысловые вехи-опоры;
·         обратить внимание на начало и конец текста, так как главная мысль текста чаще всего там;
·         спрогнозируйте содержание текста по заголовку;
·         пропускайте малозначащие детали, читайте быстро;
·         выделить структурно-смысловые части текста;
·         начать с прочтения всего текста, чтобы иметь представление об информации и логике развития текста;
·         осмыслить и сопоставить факты;
·         догадаться, что подразумевает автор;
·         сделать вывод на основе прочитанного;
·         догадаться о значении незнакомых слов и словосочетаний в контексте;
·         читать текст целиком , чтобы понять его тему и логику развития событий;
·         второй раз внимательно читать по одному предложению, чтобы понять какое грамматическое значение слова требует текст;
·         образовать форму и слова и вписать её в текст;
·         читайте весь текст;
·         читайте каждое предложение, чтобы понять по смыслу какая часть речи пропущена;
·         используйте нужные аффиксы для образования нужной лексической единицы;
·         прочитайте весь текст для проверки правильности;
·         не забывайте о лексико-грамматической сочетаемости лексических единиц в контексте;
·         различайте нюансы близких по значению слов;
·         старайтесь точнее понять смысл контекста для определения значения пропущенных слов;

The structure of Business E-mail.

Subject ['sʌbʤekt] –
Signature ['sɪgnəʧə] – подпись отправителя.
Importance option [ɪm'pɔːt(ə)n(t)s  'ɔpʃ(ə)n] –
BCC (blind carbon copy) –
Dear Mr Smith,
Dear Sally,
Dear Sir or Madam,

Dear all,
Dear team,
Dear colleagues,

We wish to inform you of (our new discounts). –
I am writing in reply to (your advertisement). –
Я
I am writing concerning (your latest statement). –
Я
I am writing with regard to (the latest news). –
Я
I am writing to remind you about (the meeting next Monday). –
Я
I am contacting you in connection with (the increased popularity your new product). –
Я
With reference to (your recent letter) I want to know ....
In reply to (your e-mail), I am sending you the information.
I refer to (your last phone call).  –
We understood from your letter that (you are going to organise a trade fair). –
We were glad to receive your (invitation). –
Further to our (e-mail from 1st May), I would like to (send you the agenda). –
I would like to apologize for (the delay in delivery).  –
I am writing to you in response to (your enquiry). –
I am writing on behalf of the association of shareholders. –

On behalf of Mr Black, I would like to invite you to take part in our annual conference. –
Inviting –
Apologizing – извинение
Informing – информирование
Requesting / Enquiry – запрос
Complaining –
Firstly, ...
First of all, ...
Secondly, ... –
Thirdly,... –
Finally, ...
.
Thank you again for the invitation, I am pleased to be invited to the ceremony. –
I appreciate your help. –
Я
I am grateful for your assistance in the project. –
Я
Please, contact me if you need further information. –
Feel free to contact me if you need my help. –
You can count on me when you need a consultation.
I am looking forward to your reply. –
Please deal with this issue urgently. I expect information from you tomorrow. –
See files attached to this message. –
I attach the copy of the contract for your consideration. –
Я
You can find the pictures in the attached files. –
I hope the information was helpful for you.
I hope our response has answered your enquiry. –
Best wishes,
Best regards,
Kind regards,
Sinserely,
Many thanks,
All the best.
Best regards,

to, STARLIGHT X learners.

Here are some ideas to MODULE 1 , which you can easily use in your oral speech or in writing essays:

* a film/book review
Exercise 9 (p. 17)
I recently saw a great film. It was called ‘Pride and Prejudice’. It starred Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen, and was directed by Joe Wright.The story is based on Jane Austen’s novel about 5 sisters in Georgian England whose lives are turned upside down when a wealthy young man and his best friend arrive in their neighbourhood. It is a very good film, which I thoroughly recommend. It is sad at times but has a happy ending.
Exercise 10 (p. 17)
‘Pride and Prejudice’, directed by Joe Wright, is a romantic film with a talented cast of actors and a clever plot.The story is based on Jane Austen’s novel about 5 sisters in Georgian England whose lives are turned upside down when a wealthy young man called Mr Bingley and his best
friend M. Darcy arrive in the neighbourhood. I think that ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is a great film, it keeps you entertained throughout and has a lovely, happy ending. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone. It is really worth going to see.

** likings/disliking
Exercise 4 (p. 18)
I simply love this sport. I’ve been playing since I learnt to skate at the age of five. I love getting out on the ice and shooting the puck.There’s no better feeling in the world than the crowd going crazy when you score a goal. (ice hockey)
 I don’t like it. I personally see no point in rolling a  heavy ball down an alley trying to knock over a bunch of pins. And some people take it too seriously. (bowling)

***opininion
Exercise 11 (p. 9) This type of writing lasts only 3 minutes.

My favourite means of transport is the train. I like it for several reasons. Firstly, the train is quite cheap when compared with flying. Furthermore, taking the train is a great way to see the countryside. Another thing I like about trains is that they are comfortable and you can get up and move around.

* Extreme sports are very popular these days. There are many good things about extreme sports but there are also many dangers.They can be a great form of exercise and help you get fit. Also, extreme sports give you a sense of freedom that you don’t get from other sports.However, there are dangers. People sometimes fall from a great height when bungee jumping and injured shoulders and backs are very common. I would not like to do extreme sports because I am not very keen on putting my life at risk. Extreme sports are not as competitive as other team or individual sports. In extreme sports you are competing against yourself.
Exercise 3 (p. 20)
In my free time I like hanging out with my friends because we have a lot of things we like to do together. We really like playing sports and video games. I’m keen on swimming as a hobby because it’s a great form of exercise and I’m very good at it. I just hate sitting and watching T.V. find that really boring.

***** a personal letter sample
Exercise 8 (p. 7)
Dear Raymond,
How are you? I was just writing to tell you about my trip.
Last August I went to California with my family. We
travelled there by aeroplane. We stayed there for three
weeks on our summer holiday. It was great fun.While we
were there we went swimming, surfing and did lots of
shopping for souvenirs.We also went to Disneyland for 5
days. It was the best place ever! Let me know if you have
been on holiday lately. I’d love to hear your news.
Write soon,

Peter

***** a letter of complaint
Exercise 7 (p. 25)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to you concerning a DVD player, item number AX 7235, which I ordered from your website on the 15th of August. The unit appeared to be in good condition when it arrived, and there was no damage to the packaging.
However, I am afraid that when I tried to use the player I soon discovered that it was faulty. After having only been used twice, the player’s disc tray started sticking and then it completely jammed, making the player unusable.
I am returning the player to you by courier and I would be grateful if you would send me a replacement as soon as possible. Repairing the player I am returning to you would not be an acceptable option as I am certain the problem would only occur again.
I look forward to your reply concerning this matter.
Yours faithfully,

Lawrence Reed

Speaking – Task 1 (p. 34)
I’m going to talk about sports, including which sports are the most popular and why they are important to people. I will also talk about how easy it is to participate in sports in my area and which sports I particularly enjoy.
In my opinion, the most popular sports worldwide are probably football and basketball. Football is played all over the world by all sorts of people. The main advantage of football is that all you require is a ball.Basketball can also be practised anywhere, although you do need hoops to score points. They are both team games and so playing them is a social experience as well as good exercise. In addition, both of these sports are watched by millions of fans every week, both at matches or on the television.
Sports are very important to my age group because many of us play for our school and college teams and we can spend time with our friends. Unfortunately, in my area the facilities for playing sports are not very good. In the summer, we can play outside but during the winter
months we have to use the local sports centre and it is always very busy. The council is building a new sports hall at the moment, but it will not be finished for another couple of years.
Personally, I enjoy participating in many different sports. My favourites are football,  swimming and tennis. I like to play football with my friends most evenings because it is

a fun way to spend time together. I swim regularly and it  keeps me very fit. I enjoy playing tennis as I can play with my father or my brother.
To sum up, sport is a very important part of my life, and I hope that I will continue to play sports for many years.

Writing – Part 1 (p. 34)
Dear Jack,
It was very nice to hear from you. Extreme sports are becoming quite popular in my country too. I think that snowboarding is the most well-liked extreme sport in Russia. It’s much less expensive than skiing and its great fun.
My friends and I love skateboarding in the summer and snowboarding in the winter. There aren’t any special skateboard ramps in my town, so we just use the streets. In the winter, we go up into the hills and mountains around my town to snowboard.
Where are you having your birthday party? Is it going to be a family party, or are your friends all coming too? At my last birthday party, my friend was the DJ. Are you having music at your party?
Write and tell me how your party went, and Happy Birthday!
Best wishes,
Katerina

Worthless Food

An odd thing has happened when it comes to food. Even though having the best, freshest, most wholesome food possible is one of the most significant considerations of daily life, frequently food does not receive the attention it A22 _______ . Because of vested commercial interests, greed, convenience and apathy, misinformation about food has made far too many people feelA23 _______ about it, believing that anything they can swallow is okay for them. It's not.
You may be A24 _______ to buy someone's product through advertising, false claims or promises of value. But much of the food is as worthless as eating crushed bricks. Far more ill health can be traced to what people eat than you might expect. The greatest A25 _______ to your health on this planet is not the increase of nuclear weapons, it is processed foods!
There is more devitalized worthless "food" A26 _______ to people today than real, authentic food that is necessary for our sustenance; and we have the food manufacturers to thank.
We use the term "processed food" so routinely that for many of us it has come to A27 _______ "just another kind of food". Understand what it really means.
Processing is the practice of taking a perfectly good food, one that contains the nutrients necessary to prolong life, stripping it of anything of value and then offering it for sale. Understand that when the word "processed" is used, it A28 _______ to procedures that undermine your health. It is a term that you can easily and accurately interchange with the word "destroyed".

The Oldest Road
The M1 road is the grandfather of the British motorway system. The southern section celebrated its silver jubilee in November 1984. Waking Up
Jerry hated the way his wife woke him up in the morning. It showed that she was angry with him and it B4  like that every day.
But it was really dangerous B5
 an artist like that! It made him feel bad for hours — simply hours.
She came into the room in her working clothes, with a handkerchief over her head, just to show him that she B6
up much earlier and now B7  about the house.
She called in her low warning voice: "Jerry!" "What! What's the matter?" "It's time to get the up. It's half past eight." And then she left the room, B8
 the door quietly behind her.
He supposed that she B9

What was the matter with her? What did she want? He earned lots of money. She didn't have any money, but he never said that to her. His heart was heavy. She seemed to enjoy making life B10

Self-care
We live in the era of B11  advances in "self-care".
What you need is new information. There is so much you can learn to have a B12
 life. Then you can fulfill your needs in health easily and routinely as part of your normal way of life.
It is more and more obvious that B13
 kinds of treatment and cures in the world cannot bring lasting health if you are not willing to live an existence without diseases.
Years of physical damage — smoking, drinking, overeating the wrong food, lack of rest or exercise — can only interfere with good health. Emotional instability is also incompatible with good health. And when the result is ill health, drugs are only B14
 aids.
То repair the damage of disease, or more to the point, to prevent it, you must live more B15
 .
It is possible that you know this already. But you must also know how to use that instinctive B16
 .

1. How does wind power really work?
Wind power is going to be essential to our planet in the near future. But do you really know how the wind power works? It looks easy but there are several components involved А22_______ generating wind power. This type of power can not only save us a good A23_______ of money on our utility bills, but it will also play an important role in saving our planet.                                                                                                                                             For many of us, wind just looks invisible and does not actually have any properties but in A24_______, air is a fluid that contains particles constructed of gas. We can turn these gas particles into power because as the wind gusts, kinetic energy is created, which then can be harnessed and changed over into power.                                                                          Having access to wind is very essential for this operation to work but another indispensable ingredient is the blades that are used. Their design is very A25_______ to the effectiveness of the turbine. The other important component is simply the size of the blade. The bigger the blade is, the more energy is seized and more power can be created for us in the form of electricity.                                                                                                                   Much also depends A26_______ where you live to figure out the right blade size. In regions with law wind levels, small blades work better because more wind is required to push the larger turbine blades. In an area that is very windy, it is much better to use large blades in A27______ to use all of the wind available.                                                                    This gives you the fundamental principles of how electricity is produced from the wind. Today is a fantastic time to do as much A28_____ as you can about wind power so you will be able to make educated decisions in the future.

      English is spreading fast and it has been predicted that one in ten of the world's 6000 languages will become extinct over the next century. Up to half of the world's languages are no longer being taught to children, threatening them with eventual extinction. Even countries with millions of native language speakers are so worried by the growth of English that they have devised policies to fight back.
    The French have brought in regulations to combat what they see as an American cultural invasion. Corporations and government bodies are not allowed to use English terms where there are French equivalents. In order to protect local languages and culture, the European Union introduced new legislation, which states that half of the TV programmes shown must be European.
    It is especially difficult to hold back the tide of English words in hi-tech industries because many of the innovations are American. Until recently all university subjects in Malaysia were taught in Malay. Now, however, universities have had to make  exceptions for Information Technology, as the majority of IT books are in English and they simply do not have the time or resources to translate them.
    Today there is another medium to worry about: the Internet. English accounts for 90 per cent of traffic and the World Wide Web will only accelerate its spread around the world. Most communication on the Net is written, so it needn't pose the same threat to regional accents and dialects, which may help to prevent the disappearance of minority languages.
    English is not exactly the same the world over: you only have to compare American and British English to realise that. The Net, too, is an instrument of change. Because Net communication is mainly written, many people use abbreviations to speed things up and this trend  means the language is evolving with Internet use.
    Languages have their own dynamics and there is little governments can do to change their course. In 18th century Germany , Frederick II set up a commission to get rid of French words from German. It failed because the dynamics of a language come from the bottom up rather than from the top down.
    English will continue to spread and evolve with the Net but people will still speak their own languages. In most cases they'll use English for electronic communication, but native languages at home. Languages are more than just  a means of communication: they are also an important part of regional cultures and identities and they do not disappear easily.

A15. According to the writer, one reason why some languages will become extinct is that
1) English has become the first language in some countries.
2) there are not enough language teachers.
3) young people are not learning them.
4) they are not spoken all the time.

A16. The French government introduced regulations in order to

1) restrict the number of English films on television.
2) increase the number of native language speakers.
3) control the amount of American English spoken.
4) limit the use of English words.

A17. What does "they" refer to in the third paragraph?

1) university subjects.
2) Malaysian universities.
3) exceptions.
4) IT textbooks.

A18. The writer says that as a result of the Internet some languages might

1) become more widespread.

2) be saved from extinction.
3) only be used in written form.
4) no longer be used on radio and television.

A19. According to the writer, what effect will the Internet have on English?

1) English on the Internet could soon be difficult to understand.
2) English will be quicker to read.
3) British English words will not be used on the Internet.
4) The appearance of English could change considerably on the Internet.

A20. What does the writer mean when he says "the dynamics of a language come from the bottom up rather than the top down?

1) People, not governments, determine what happens to a language.
2) Changes in language are not determined by how powerful a country is.
3) The least frequent words of a language are the first to change.
4) Unwanted foreign words disappear naturally.

A21. Faced with the dominance of English, what does the writer think will happen to the world's other languages?

1) Most of them will die out.
2) They will only be spoken at home.
3) Many will exist alongside English.
4) They will consist mainly of English words.

hello, everyone,
here are some hints to be at hand while sitting for an exam

December 27
Here is a story to compare RESUME and CV (curricular Vitae)

Resume
СV

(Contact Information).

(Working experience).

(Education).

(Additional Information).
(Contact Information).

Образование
(Education).

(Awards).

(Thesis).

(Working experience).

(Teaching Experience).

(Publications and presentations).

(Affiliation).

(Extracurricular Activities).

(References).

November 20
This is a model how to write a personal letter. just study and practice

You have received a letter from your English pen friend Laury who writes:
       …Guess what? I’m coming to Russia in August with my parents. You know I’m especially interested in Russian art and it’s a wonderful chance to visit some art galleries and museums. What would you recommend me to visit? Is museum entrance fee high in Moscow? Are there any discounts for students?
       Well, I must finish now because I’ve got an exam tomorrow. Write back soon and tell me all your news.

                                                                                                                                  Moscowk                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Russia   k                                                                                                                                                                                                                   06/06/13
       Dear Laury,
     Hi! How is it going? Thanks for your letter. I hope you did well at your exam. Was it difficult?
    Well, I’m really glad you’re going to visit Russia. There are lots of art galleries and museums in Moscow. You should by all means visit the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts because they are the best ones. Unfortunately, there are no discounts for students in summer. However, the entrance fees aren’t very high.
     Anyway, write back and tell me all your travel details. Would you like me to meet you at the airport? How long are you going to stay in Moscow? What other cities are you planning to visit?
     I’ve got to go now because Mum’s calling me. Hope to see you soon!
    All the best,

    Kate

so, follow me and practice English! break your leg!

C2: You have 40 minutes to do this task. Comment on the following statement.
The future of education — books or computers?
What is your opinion? Are computers going to replace printed books in the future?
Write 200-250 words.
Essay
         The latest advances in information technology make people think that schools of the future will use computers instead of printed books. Although electronic books have not been widely accepted yet, I believe they will be able to take the place of printed books.
         In my opinion, students will widely use computers for studying in the future. To begin with, computers can store lots of books in their memory and modern software allows us to find quickly the necessary information. Besides, with the interactive programmes on computers studying will be much more exciting. What is more, electronic books will not degrade overtime like their printed counterparts.
       Nevertheless, lots of disbelievers argue that computers will not replace printed books because a printed book is better for human eyes than a computer screen. In addition, books are cheaper and easier to use since they do not need electricity or the internet connection.

         However, I disagree with this opinion because modern computer screens emit no radiation and allow us to read even in low light conditions, so they are even less harmful than books. Of course we will have to pay for electricity but I think it will be cheaper than to pay for printed books, which are very expensive nowadays.
         To sum up, I think computers and printed books will peacefully coexist for years to come, but in the future technological progress will make it possible for pupils to carry laptops or even palmtops instead of traditional bags with lots of heavy books.

21st October 2013
Dear students, sorry for a long break in actual publication on this page, but I'll try to improve the situation with some new material in support of exam preps training. Meet me with some idioms, set phrases and grammar patterns:

He is a friendly person. –
The flowers are lovely. –
His question was silly. –
My grandmother is a lively person. –
Необходимо использовать конструкцию «in a ... way/manner»:
She smiled in a friendly way.
The child was dressed in a lovely manner. –
He giggled in a silly way.
They talked in a  lively manner. –
This newspaper comes out daily. –
My father is reading a daily newspaper. –
We pay for rent monthly. –
They are waiting for our monthly payment. –
We hold our meetings weekly. –
Our weekly meeting is put off.
The conference takes place yearly. –

We invited Dr. Black for our yearly conference. –

Any port in a storm

Today: Wed, 27 Mar 2013
RSS Feed
Possible interpretation: In times of danger, any shelter is better than none. In an emergency, we have to accept whatever solution presents itself (for the time being).
Note: port (noun) = harbour; a place on the coast where ships can find protection from rough seas

Origin: For ships at sea (especially) in older days, a bad storm could be very dangerous, and at such times they had to find shelter in "any port", even one that they would not normally have entered.

Quick Quiz:
If "any port in a storm" is true, then any solution in an emergency
  1. is better than no solution
  2. will lead to more trouble
  3. should be rejected until the right solution can be found

                              immediate action

TASK 2. Read the gapped text to get the general idea.
Which of these statements expresses the main idea more exactly?
1. A person can be active and enjoy life at an old age.
2. A caring great granddaughter risks her reputation for her grandmother.
3. Relationships between different generations can be curious.

This is a story of an old lady, frankly speaking, of a very old lady: she was on the point of turning 82 but nobody expected the old lady (she preferred to be called ‘Betty’) to pop off in the near future and all her relatives and friends were supposed to do her a kindness giving her small presents now and then. (A)_____________________. Consequently her friends and relatives developed the habit of phoning her to find out what present she would rather have for this or that occasion. Thus, dear Betty was used to getting nice gifts which was an entertaining part of her life and made her feel an active member of the family and the whole society as well. She stood out among the ladies of her age as a very energetic person and the only thing that could have annoyed her was even a small amount of boredom.
One day her great granddaughter made her a present of an exotic African plant in a tiny pot which she had succeeded in smuggling from Africa. You are sure to know that no plants are allowed to be carried across the borders. (B)_______________________
The plant with its carved leaves and velvet violet flowers smelt delicious and produced a great impression on Betty, who was an expert in home plants. No wonder, the young lady was duly rewarded with a grateful smile of her always fault-finding great grandmother.
The considerate granddaughter diligently performed her duty in dropping on her beloved granny and soon she spotted a certain change which she couldn’t fail to notice. She cast a glance at the granny, then at the exotic African flower, which had considerably grown in size, and was careless enough to utter a sentence which had unexpected consequences: “(C)______________. Admittedly, this is the effect of the pot flower on you!” The old lady, casting a loving look at the flower, of which she had been taking the most considerate care, smiled happily. And a great and curious idea popped into her head.
She kept a good deal of money on her bank account which she could fall on back in case of emergency. The emergency took shape of a small pot flower business that she had made up her mind to start. Presumably, the old lady knew the business ropes: she hired a helper who cultivated the plant which responded with a lot of green twigs to the proper care of the newly-born business lady and her faithful helper. (D)__________________. Her fresh complexion and agile gait were the brightest illustration of the effect of the plant on the aging body.
Soon the small quiet village street witnessed the sign that was stuck to the window of the old lady’s house from the outside. It read: “Don’t mind your old age! Mind my African flower!
Don’t hesitate to drop in and get it! (E)_____________________________. Ask BETTY.” The sign triggered off a continuous flood of curious elderly people who didn’t grudge paying a reasonable sum of money for an unusual plant. If it failed to improve their health, it would decorate their homes. Still the healing effect on the aging part of the village population was evident: it improved the immune system and normalized the blood pressure.
Unexpectedly a trouble came by. Who do you think from? From the neighbours who seemed to have been always so understanding and responsive. They had never grudged Betty a warm smile and a hand to carry her shopping bag for her. She was winding them up because they liked a quiet life and a quiet surrounding more than anything else. And the noisy visitors who arrived by cars and disturbed the neighbours by their loud talk irritated them. (F)_____________: they had been so considerate of Betty but she turned out selfish and wouldn’t listen to their persistent complaints to transfer her business from her house to another more suitable place.
As for Betty, with the passage of time she pleased her neighbours: the burden of her business told on her. One of those days she peacefully passed away. Or, may be, it was high time for her to leave the best of the worlds.
