Apology / apologize

Много выражений включают слова apology(извинение) и  apologize (извиняться):

To make one's apology for something to somebody – приносить извинения за что-то кому-то

Please accept my apologies. – Пожалуйста, примите мои извинения.

I apologize (for something). – Я прошу прощения.

My apologies! – Мои извинения!

Эти выражения употребляются, когда вы хотите попросить прощения за причиненный вами вред, неудобство.

Все варианты c apology (apologize) имеют достаточную степень формальности. Первые три  используются в формальной переписке. «My apologies!» является самым неформальным из всех.  

Sorry/ excuse me

В разговоре очень распространены слова sorry и excuse me. Хотя переводятся они одинаково: простите/извините, но используются при различных обстоятельствах. Рассмотрим разницу:

Excuse me употребляют:

  Когда хотят привлечь внимание собеседника, побеспокоить человека:

Excuse me! Can you tell me the time? – Извините, не подскажете, который час.

Excuse me! You have dropped your wallet. – Простите! Вы уронили свой бумажник!

  Когда хотят извиниться за что-то, что совершили, обычно не очень серьезное, но может доставить неудобство или показаться грубым:

Excuse me for interrupting, but I want to add something! – Прошу прощения за то, что перебиваю, я хочу добавить кое-что.

Excuse me! We didn’t know that you are busy. – Простите, я не знаю, что вы заняты.

  Чтобы вежливо сказать о том, что вам нужно уйти:

Excuse me! I have to go now to catch the last bus. – Прошу меня простить. Мне нужно уйти сейчас, чтобы успеть на последний автобус.

  В AmE используют, чтобы попросить собеседника повторить:

Excuse me? The connection is bad. – Что-то? Связь очень плохая.

– My name is Ann. – Excuse me? - Ann! – Меня зовут Анна. – Как-как? – Анна.

Sorry говорят в таких ситуациях:

  Если вы уже доставили человеку неприятность или неудобство:

You stepped on my foot! – Sorry! – Вы наступили мне на ногу. – Извините.

Sorry for my late visit. I have to tell you something important. – Простите за поздний визит. Я должен сказать вам кое-что важное.

  Чтобы проявить сострадание и сочувствие:

I am so sorry  to hear that you are ill. – Мне очень жаль слышать, что вы заболели.

We were so sorry when we knew about the accident. – Мне было очень жаль, когда я узнал об аварии.

! Будьте внимательны, sorry используется с разными предлогами с разных конструкциях:

I’m sorry FOR DOING SOMETHING.

I’m sorry for interrupting you.

I’m sorry TO DO SOMETHING.

I’m sorry to interrupt you.

I’m sorry ABOUT SOMETHING.

I’m sorry about the interruption at the meeting.

I’m sorry THAT I DID SOMETHING.

I’m sorry that I interrupted you at the meeting.

Важно заметить, что первые два варианта различаются по значению. В зависимости от того, что идет после глагола sorry: герундий (doing) или инфинитив (to do), значение предложения меняется. Подробнее о разнице читайте в этой статье.

Forgive me и другие.

Forgive me! – Простите меня! Говорят, когда просят прощения за серьезные проступки, чтобы человек перестал обижаться, злиться:

I didn’t mean to hurt you. Forgive me! – Я не хотел обижать тебя. Прости меня.

Forgive me for leaving your party. I really had to. – Прости меня за то, что я ушел с твоей вечеринки. Мне правда нужно было это сделать. 

Кроме того, forgive me (как и excuse me) может использоваться в качестве извинения за что-либо не очень серьезное,  но обидное или грубое по отношению к собеседнику :

I broke your cup. Forgive me. – Я случайно разбил твою чашку. Прости меня.

Есть еще несколько способов выразить извинения, но они достаточно формальные, поэтому используются редко:

I beg your pardon. – Приношу свои извинения.

Pardon. – Простите.

Как реагировать на извинения:

Если извинение формальное, то и ответ должен быть формальным:

No need to apologize (не стоит извинений):

– We apologize for causing you inconvenience, Sir. – No need to apologize. – Мы приносим свои извинения за доставленные вам неудобства. – Не стоит извинений.

It doesn’t matter. – Не имеет значения. / Ничего страшного.

Говорят, чтобы показать, что ситуация, которая вызвала извинения, несерьезная:

I’m sorry for calling you so early. – It doesn’t matter. I wasn’t asleep. -  Извини, что  я так рано тебе позвонил. – Ничего страшного, я не спал.

No problem. – Ничего страшного.

Используется в ответ на извинения, в связи с чем-либо несущественным:

– Sorry, I'm late. – No problem We haven’t started the meeting anyway. – Простите, я опоздал. – Ничего, мы все равно еще не начали встречу.
