Задание С1.
You have received a letter from your English pen friend Laury who writes:
…Guess what? I’m coming to Russia in August with my parents. You know I’m especially interested in Russian art and it’s a wonderful chance to visit some art galleries and museums. What would you recommend me to visit? Is museum entrance fee high in Moscow? Are there any discounts for students?
Well, I must finish now because I’ve got an exam tomorrow. Write back soon and tell me all your news.

                                                                                                                                  Moscow                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Russia                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           06/06/13
       Dear Laury,
Hi! How is it going? Thanks for your letter. I hope you did well at your exam. Was it difficult?
Well, I’m really glad you’re going to visit Russia. There are lots of art galleries and museums in Moscow. You should by all means visit the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts because they are the best ones. Unfortunately, there are no discounts for students in summer. However, the entrance fees aren’t very high.
Anyway, write back and tell me all your travel details. Would you like me to meet you at the airport? How long are you going to stay in Moscow? What other cities are you planning to visit?
I’ve got to go now because Mum’s calling me. Hope to see you soon!
    All the best,
    Kate

C2: You have 40 minutes to do this task. Comment on the following statement.
The future of education — books or computers?
What is your opinion? Are computers going to replace printed books in the future?
Write 200-250 words.
Essay
The latest advances in information technology make people think that schools of the future will use computers instead of printed books. Although electronic books have not been widely accepted yet, I believe they will be able to take the place of printed books.
In my opinion, students will widely use computers for studying in the future. To begin with, computers can store lots of books in their memory and modern software allows us to find quickly the necessary information. Besides, with the interactive programmes on computers studying will be much more exciting. What is more, electronic books will not degrade overtime like their printed counterparts.
Nevertheless, lots of disbelievers argue that computers will not replace printed books because a printed book is better for human eyes than a computer screen. In addition, books are cheaper and easier to use since they do not need electricity or the internet connection.
However, I disagree with this opinion because modern computer screens emit no radiation and allow us to read even in low light conditions, so they are even less harmful than books. Of course we will have to pay for electricity but I think it will be cheaper than to pay for printed books, which are very expensive nowadays.
To sum up, I think computers and printed books will peacefully coexist for years to come, but in the future technological progress will make it possible for pupils to carry laptops or even palmtops instead of traditional bags with lots of heavy books.
Важно!
1. Обязательно используйте вводные слова в начале каждого абзаца (я их выделила жирным шрифтом).
2. Старайтесь не использовать простые слова, такие, как I think, а заменяйте их другими эквивалентами, например, I believe.

Topic: The way I LEARN English(lesson 2, ex47)
You know, I have been learning English for six years already, but I believe, it’s not easy at all. At school we have five English classes every week, and drill English for half an hour four times a week. In fact, we have a lot of drills. People say, you can’t build a house without foundations. It’s true. In English it’s grammar. But grammar doesn’t exist in isolation and we drill grammar together with vocabulary. When I learn new words I try to learn and practise them in the context. I am sure,  it’s better to learn and practise words than to learn them by heart. And I have no problems learning the words related to my hobbies and interests. if i don't know any words, i look them up in the dictionary.
There is another serious problem for English learners. I mean idioms. We should keep up-to-date and learn popular idioms and proverbs.
Frankly speaking, English intonation is awful sometimes. But if you get it wrong, people think you are rude. So, we must learn both formal and social English, learn how to ask for information, how to speak correctly and fluently.
By the way, I learn English on my own, too. I find reading books in the original very helpful. Sometimes I watch educational videos on TV and listen to the songs in English.
I daresay, learning a foreign language is not at all simple.

Moscow, the beautiful
Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation, its political, historical, financial, economical, cultural, educational and  sporting centre. Moscow was first mentioned in chronicles in the twelfth century, it was founded by Prince Yuri Dolgorukiy in 11 47 on the banks of the Moskva River. In fact, Moscow is situated in the European country of Russia and its population is over 11 million people. Moscow is definitely a city of contrasts. Here history meets modern life on every step, there are ancients churches and modern sky scrapers, offices, shopping malls, sporting clubs, museums and galleries. Moscow is a busy metropolitan centre, it never sleeps, they say.
The heart of Moscow is Red Square and the Kremlin. It’s the seat of the Russian government and a tourist attraction. You can see a lot of awesome sights on Red Square.
* First of all, it’s St. Basil’s Cathedral. ITs architects created a real wonder, eight churches round the ninth tall church, with thick walls, and the cupolas are beautifully painted. In front of the cathedral there is the monument to Minin and Pozharsky, they were  heroes of the people’s struggle during the war against Poland.
**The Lenin Mausoleum,  which stand in the centre of the Square, was first built of wood, but lately оther materials were used, such as marble, stone, granite.
*** The Spasskaya Tower is one of the world-known symbols of Russia. The huge ruby star on the top looks great, and the clock strikes every hour, half an hour and the quarter. Lots of tourists come to see and hear the chimes.
****GUM is the central department store, the greatest onе in Russia. It’s a very impressive building, there are so many shops under a glass roof and a lot of decorations inside.
**** The State History museum of Moscow keeps a rich collection of of documents, pictures and drawings, maps of Russia.
*****The Moscow metro is the most popular means of public transport. It’s so quick and beautiful that tourist rush to see and use it, some stations look like a real palace, with decorations and statues all around.
Moscow is the city which must be seen in any season. (I, personally, would like to visit Moscow because I’d like to see its beauty with my own eyes, to visit its museums and galleries, to walk in its parks, and, to admire the awesome sights on Red Square, of course).

In fact, Russia is the greatest country in the world which is situated on two continents, Europe and Asia. The official name is the Russian Fedaration. Its population is about 150 million people of different nationalities, who live in 42 republics and speak more than 100 languages. The nature of the country is really unique, here high mountains turn into green meadows, deep forests turn into streams and lakes, vast plains turn into deserts and lowlands, taiga and tundra turn into fields. (Variant 2: here Europe meets Asia) and the Urals form a natural border between two continents)/ Russia borders on many countries, such as Ukraine, the Baltic republics, Poland, Japan. Seas and oceans wash the country in the north, south, east and west. They are: the Arctic Ocean, the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, the Sea of Japan. The deepest fresh water lake of the world is also situated in this country. It’s Lake Baikal in Siberia.

The country is rich in mineral resources, such as coal, gold, copper, gas, iron and others. Russia is a great political, agricultural, financial and educational power.
The official head of the country is President, who guarantees the Constitution, signs laws and protects the interests of common people. The National government consists of three bodies, the President with his helpers, the Council of ministers with Prime Minister, and the Federal Assembly. The Assembly is divided into two houses, the State Duma and the Federal Council. They make bills, introduce the projects and rule the political situation inside the Federation.
The official symbols of the country are the coat-of-arms, the national flag and the anthem/ the plant symbol is a birch tree, the national souvenir is matreshka doll.
